Effects of SMP Treatment and Storage after Priming on Germination and Seedling Growth in Watermelon



Abstract
The effects of solid matrix priming (SMP) treatment and storage after SMP treatment on seed germination and seedling growth were investigated in 8 watermelon cultivars. SMP treated seeds showed short mean time to germination (T_(50)) and high early emergence rate when grown in cell trays and petridishes. However, SMP had no effect on seed germination rate when incubated in germination paper. The enhanced seed vigor by SMP treatment was apparent when the seeds were germinated under adverse environmental conditions such as low temperature. Seed germination was not significantly influenced by different chemical solutions added to SMP mixture or by watermelon cultivars. Our data indicate that SMP treatment effect can be successfully maintained at least for 70 days even at room temperature.
